Ralph Lauren, a business executive and American fashion designer most-identified for his Polo Ralph Lauren clothing brand, was born Ralph Rueben Lifshitz to Jewish immigrants Fraydl and Frank Lifshitz, in the Bronx of New York in 1939. When Ralph was 16, his older brother had the family name changed from Lifshitz to Lauren.
At a young age, Lauren started selling neckties to his classmates to earn money to buy suits and even stated under his photo in his high school yearbook that his goal was to be a millionaire. After attending two years of business school, serving two years in the United States Army, getting married and working as a salesman for Brook Brothers, Lauren opened a necktie shop where he introduced his own design of “Polo" neckties.
Lauren may have started out designing and selling neckties, but his talent soon expanded into so much more, for in 1970 he won the COTY Award for his menswear line and introduced a women’s line of suits and shortly after designed the famous polo shirt, all which have proved to be timeless classics. From there forward, he has built a multi-million dollar empire that includes a multitude of different types of products, including: Ralph Lauren Candles.
